Design-Build Unmasked: Rebuilding Through Integration Design-build is a collaborative team approach to project delivery that integrates design and construction with a single-point of responsibility contract. last year, market analysis showed that design-build--at 40 percent of overall non-residential market share--will soon eclipse other delivery methods. over the course of 2011, significant legislative victories in Ohio and New York brought design-build authority to public agencies there for the first time. The design-build momentum continues to build!

Program: Single-Step Design-Build - New USACE Policy - Presented by Bill Green
The Corps has committed to issuing a new policy that will severely limit the use of single-step DB in the future. DBIA RMR Board Member Bill Green and Lisa Washington at DBIA National had direct input by helping draft the policy along with George Lea, the head of military construction for the Corps. When we see something wrong in our industry, we don't have to just sit here and complain. We have the power to change it through our national organizations. ACEC, AGC, and AIA have all been involved and have fully supported this effort. Join us to hear about the process and outcome of this important issue for our industry.

New DBIA RMR Student Chapter: UC Denver’s Master of Architecture Program in the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP)

Maria Delgado, UC Denver Student Chapter President

UC Denver’s Master of Architecture program in the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP) has a new student chapter: Design Build Institute of America. This fall marked the foundation of the new club, students motivated bythe strong presence of design-build in the curriculum, realized establishing a student-run organization (DBIA student chapter) would enhance the learning experience while merging professionals with students. The club has three goals they want to provide student with: tours, presentations, and community involvement. The DBIA student chapter has worked with firms like Sprocket, RNL, Studio Completiva, and Fransen and Pittman General Contractors to bring professionals into the classroom to discuss how they utilize design build in the industry. The DBIA student chapter is also participating in the Denver Architectural Foundation’s Hard Hat Tours to provide students with the opportunity to visit active construction sites once a month. The club is also sharing their knowledge with the community by developing a small-scale design build project at the school like a planter or bench where the students will be responsible for designing the project, creating a schedule, fundraising a budget, and physically building the project. Feel free to visit their website at www.dbia-ucdenver.webs.com to learn more about the club. If your company is interested in participating with the club in any fashion don’t hesitate to contact them at dbiaucdenver@gmail.com.

Congratulations to the Winners of the 2012 DBIA RMR Student Competition

Each team responded to a fictitious RFQ for a Performing Arts Center on the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma campus in Chickasha, OK. Each region judged the teams in their region. There was a total of twenty-seven teams from twenty-two schools competing nationally. The first place winners of each region, nine teams, were then judged by a panel of six national judges to identify a shortlist of three teams. The three teams will be issued an RFP for a project on October 15th, which is due on October 23rd. They will then present to the six national judges at the National Conference in New Orleans on November 8th.
